The Cyber Case Series

by Ken Tentarelli

Most thriller writers research cybersecurity. I was fortunate enough to live it.

People often ask how I came to write cyber thrillers. The answer begins with a lifelong fascination with technology.

As a teenager, I was an avid ham radio operator, captivated by the challenge of communicating over ever-greater distances. I eventually became one of the earliest amateur radio operators to bounce radio signals off the moon. Looking back, I can see that those late nights spent experimenting with radios were the beginning of a journey that would shape both my career and, years later, my fiction.

That fascination led me to Bell Laboratories, AT&T’s renowned research and development organization. I began my career as an engineer and eventually managed engineering teams during a remarkable period when communications technology was transforming the world. Along the way, I worked on encrypted communications systems and internet security protocols—long before cybersecurity became a topic of everyday conversation.

For most of my professional life, I solved engineering problems. Today, I solve fictional ones.

My writing career actually began in a very different place. After my wife, Liz, and I traveled to Italy, I became captivated by its history, art, and culture. Standing in the Roman Forum and walking the streets of Florence inspired me to write historical fiction. Those travels led to seven novels that earned awards from Maincrest Media, Book Excellence, and the Independent Press.

But technology kept calling me back.

As cybercrime became one of the defining challenges of our time, I realized the real world was providing stories every bit as suspenseful as fiction. Ransomware, identity theft, data breaches, and sophisticated hacking operations weren’t just making headlines—they were changing the way we live. Having spent my career working with secure communications, I knew there was an opportunity to write thrillers that captured both the excitement and the reality of this hidden world.

That’s how Cyber Security Agency agent Seph Carano was born.

Seph was inspired in part by the strong women who have shaped my own life—my mother, my wife, and my daughter. Intelligent, resourceful, and relentless, she pursues hackers and cybercriminals through stories rooted in the kinds of cyber threats businesses, governments, and individuals face every day.

Every Cyber Case novel begins with a real-world cybersecurity challenge. My goal isn’t to impress readers with technical jargon. It’s to take complex technology, make it understandable, and weave it into fast-paced thrillers filled with memorable characters, unexpected twists, and authentic cybercrime.

Most thriller writers research cybersecurity. I was fortunate enough to live it. That experience allows me to write stories that are grounded in reality while delivering the suspense and excitement readers expect.

If you enjoy fast-paced techno-thrillers with authentic cybersecurity, a strong female protagonist, and twists grounded in real-world cybercrime, you’re in the right place.

When I’m not writing, Liz and I enjoy traveling and discovering new places. Between adventures, we make our home in New Hampshire, where I’m busy working on Seph Carano’s next case.
